Argentina and Uruguay give “green light” to unblock the dredging of the Martín García Channel – Trade News | 01/02/26

Argentina and Uruguay have reached a “green light” agreement to unblock the maintenance dredging of the Martín García Channel, after months of negotiations between port authorities of both countries and the Comisión Administradora del Río Uruguay (CARU). The decision aims to resolve bottlenecks in the ongoing dredging works needed to keep the channel navigable between the Paraná and Uruguay rivers, which is essential for ensuring navigation of barges and vessels carrying import and export cargoes across the region. The agreement includes technical, financial and operational coordination among the parties to establish a sustainable and continuous dredging plan, preventing interruptions that could disrupt logistical chains in the Litoral and improving the competitiveness of Argentine and Uruguayan foreign trade. The initiative was welcomed by the exporter sector, which had been calling for certainty on channel depth to support river cargo flows in the region. Link to Article
