Brazil and China agree on new logistics corridor, leaving Uruguay off the map – Visión Marítima | 25/07/25

At the end of June 2025, delegations from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay agreed to launch a technical study aimed at modernizing Regulation 7 of the Paraguay–Paraná Waterway, used regionally for nearly 30 years. The plan proposes increasing barge convoy sizes from 20 to 30 units and widening them from 50 m to 65 m, with virtual simulations and field trials stretching from San Lorenzo (Argentina) to Nueva Palmira (Uruguay). The objective is to boost operational efficiency, lower logistics costs, and better utilize the corridor’s cargo capacity. However, Uruguay’s TCP representative warned that the new corridor could marginalize Uruguay, as Paraguay’s container traffic—currently nearly 48% of Montevideo’s throughput—might be rerouted through Brazilian or Buenos Aires ports instead.
