Uruguay and Paraguay have signed a new customs protocol enabling the DNA and DNIT to share container scan data and images, aiming to bolster security—particularly against drug smuggling—and streamline trade operations at the Port of Montevideo. This initiative comes as Uruguay seeks to regain Paraguayan transshipment traffic that shifted to Buenos Aires due to high port costs. Currently, DNIT already scans and seals 100% of containers bound for Montevideo. The protocol reinforces Montevideo’s standing as a “clean port” and enhances logistical efficiency for Paraguayan exporters, enabling reduced transit times and operational costs. Link
