Montevideo Port has experienced a significant decline in transshipment activity, with a 50% drop in transit container movement during the first four months of 2025. This decrease is attributed to factors such as worsening logistical and operational times in Uruguay and the implementation of comprehensive container scans following drug trafficking scandals. Consequently, competitors like the ports of Buenos Aires, Dock Sud, and Navegantes have absorbed part of this cargo. Additionally, the departure of major shipping lines, such as MSC, which relocated their services to Argentine and Brazilian ports, has exacerbated the situation. Despite significant investments in port infrastructure, Montevideo faces the challenge of increasing its operated volume to avoid underutilization of its facilities.
