Uruguay to Rehabilitate Railway Bridge over the Río Negro – Todo Logística News | 05/10/26
Uruguay will rehabilitate the railway bridge over the Río Negro in Paso de los Toros under a contract signed between the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP) and the Uruguayan Railway Corporation (CFU), with the aim of restoring rail connectivity to the north of the country and strengthening freight transportation. The project is expected to take approximately 10 months, with an estimated cost of US$1.3 million, and will cover a bridge approximately 750 meters long. The works will include strengthening the structure and superstructure, replacing 1,300 sleepers, and installing new rails. The rehabilitation will expand currently available railway operations and represents a first step toward consolidating the main structure of Uruguay’s national rail network. In particular, restoring the north-south connection will make it possible to transport production from Rivera to the south, expanding opportunities for rail freight and improving integration between the country’s different corridors. The bridge also has historical significance: it was built by the Central Railway and entered service in 1887, allowing the railway to cross the Río Negro and extend northward, which gave Paso de los Toros a strategic role within Uruguay’s railway network. Its rehabilitation is part of the MTOP’s broader efforts to expand rail connectivity and improve the infrastructure available for freight transportation. Link to Article
